The Kicking the Seat podcast and YouTube channel hosted by Ian Simmons grabbed the “Earth’s Mightiest Critics” as passengers back to the “Wasteland” world of George Miller’s Mad Max universe with a talk on the new prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. As always, it was a hoot to Ian, Mark Krawczyk of Special Mark Productions, and Jeff York of The Establishing Shot to discuss how much gas and how many bullets we have for this movie.
Read MoreThis new sequel promised the origin story of Mad Max: Fury Road’s scene-stealing and far-and-away best character. The enigmatic starlet Anya Taylor-Joy of The Queen’s Gambit walks into Charlize Theron’s past and shadow to take viewers into the campfire tale history that would forge cinema’s toughest broad this side of Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor. Fill up the gas tank and toss us the keys to the multiplex, right? Not so fast. Pump the brakes and skid across the sand to a stop.

Read MoreAs I say every year, plenty of regular everyday people make New Year's Resolutions, but I think bigger entities, namely movie makers and movie moguls, need to make them too. Over the life of this website, this is my absolute favorite editorial to write every year. I have fun taking the movie industry to task for things they need to change. I'm sarcastic, but I'm not the guy to take it to the false internet courage level of some Twitter troll. This will be as forward as I get all year.
Read MoreFollowing his three-trophy Oscar haul for "Birdman" last year, filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu returns with an even more expansive cinematic challenge. Inspired by a wild true story, "The Revenant" is an unrelenting survival drama that makes "Cast Away" look like a cute day at the beach. Powered by raw natural beauty and a constant nerve of savage peril, Inarritu's film succeeds with striking artistry and superior craftsmanship in polishing a harsh and rough-hewn legend. Four-time Academy Award nominee Leonardo DiCaprio pushes himself and you over edge after edge in the most challenging performance of his career.
Read MoreFor this writer, "Mad Max: Fury Road" is a daunting challenge for this website's definition of mindless action as a movie genre. Mindless action has its range from the trash of Michael Bay to the treasure of the "Fast and Furious" franchise. However, what separates the trash from the treasure is quality and impact. The quality speaks to the action and the impact speaks to the story being sewn along the way, even if it's secondary. The really good mindless action movies offer just enough heft of a compelling story to make the action matter and resonate beyond just superficial coolness. As incredible in stunt work and thrills as "Mad Max: Fury Road" is, it is missing too much of that heft to matter beyond being really cool to watch.
