To reveal more of the emotional and scientific obstacle course would take away from the engrossing experience to be had by “Arrival.”  This is the anti-”Independence Day,” so don’t expect a populist romp.  Instead, open your mind to a stimulating and provocative mindbender that may require more than one viewing to grasp and appreciate.  The trippy events unfolding out of the screenplay tangle the puppeteer’s strings and play with narrative and filmmaking forces few are daring enough, and smart enough, to wield.

MOVIE REVIEW: Captain America: Civil War

The absolute proof of the intact Marvel formula is the elevated scope and confidence given to "Captain America: Civil War."  Spinning as a dual sequel to 2014's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and last year's "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and following the darkly-operatic-yet-similarly-premised competitor "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice," this film survives a few glaring imperfections and overweight ambition to maintain the Marvel flagship.  It plays it safe because it knows safe works for their brand and satisfies the masses.  They know they're getting their cash registers out and hiring extra accountants.  To others looking for more risk, you've come to the wrong place.

There are certain things Tom Cruise does absolutely right and playing Ethan Hunt is one of them.  Like him or not as a person outside of the multiplex, Cruise remains the undisputed and penultimate action star in the world today, if not in all of the history of cinema.  He pushes the envelope like no one else and, as a producer in this series, he puts his money where his safety harness is.  What he dares to do on-screen pays off in superior results.
