New data reveals the states that love movies the most... and their favorite genre

Illinois is one of the states that loves movies the most, new research show. Illinois ranks eighth with an average monthly search volume of 1,122 searches per 100,000 people. The favorite genre in Illinois is horror. With an average monthly search volume of 333 per 100,000 people, it’s far clear of the second favorite genre of Illinoisans - animated - at 196 average monthly searches per 100,000 people.

The study by Japan-101 analyzed search volume data for multiple phrases, terms, and queries related to movies and movie genres over the last 12 months in order to determine which states love movies the most.

Somewhat unsurprisingly, ranking in first place is California. The Golden State is the home of cinema, so it’s no wonder that it is sitting clear in first place with 1,296 average monthly searches per 100,000 people made for movie-related terms. California’s favorite genre is horror, with 386 monthly searches on average per 100,000 people. California also has the highest average search volume out of all the states for terms relating to crime, superhero, and thriller movies.

Ranking in at second place in Texas. With 1,203 average monthly searches per 100,000 people, the Lone Star State is far clear of third place. The favorite movie genre of the Texan people is none other than horror, with 381 average monthly searches per 100,000 people. Animated movies come behind in second with 184 average monthly searches per 100,000 people.

Taking third place is Utah, with an average monthly volume of 1,180 searches per 100,000 people. The home of the Sundance Film Festival, the favorite genre of movie in the state is horror, with an average monthly search volume of 325 per 100,000 people. Utah also has the highest interest of all the states in musicals, as well as animated movies, with 19 and 230 average monthly searches per 100,000 people, respectively.

Colorado is very close behind in fourth place, with 1,176 searches on average per 100,000 people. While horror movies are by far the most popular genre in the state, with an average of 345 monthly searches per 100,000 people, the people of Colorado also show the most interest out of any state for sci-fi movies, with an average of 78 monthly searches per 100,000 people, narrowly beating Oregon, Washington in interest in the particular genre, with both having an average of 77 searches per month per 100,000 people.

With an average monthly search volume of 1,139 per 100,000 people, Nevada ranks fifth. Known for desert landscapes, vibrant nightlife, and Las Vegas, among other things, Nevada also has a population of avid movie watchers. Horror movies are by far the most popular genre in the state, with an average monthly search volume of 346 per 100,000 people.

The remainder of the top ten features New York taking the sixth spot on the list with an average monthly search volume of 1,128 searches per 100,000 people. In New York, horror movies are the most popular genre, with an average monthly search volume of 305 per 100,000 people. New Yorkers also show the most interest out of all the states in drama movies, with an average monthly search volume of 12 per 100,000 people.

Arizona ranks seventh, with an average monthly search volume of 1,123 searches per 100,000 people. Horror is the favorite genre of the state with an average monthly search volume of 333 per 100,000 people.

Georgia follows closely in ninth place, with an average monthly search volume of 1,110 searches per 100,000 people. Georgia’s most popular genre is horror, with an average monthly search volume of 339 per 100,000 people.

Washington closes off the top ten states in at tenth place, with an average monthly search volume of 1,103 searches per 100,000 people. The state’s favorite genre is horror, with an average monthly search volume of 282 per 100,000 people.

Horror movies take the top spot for the most searched genre across many states, with a total average monthly search volume of 13,850 per 100,000 people across all of the US. However, other genres, such as animated movies (8,145 total average monthly searches per 100,000 people), comedies (5,747 total average monthly searches per 100,000 people), and superhero movies (3,807 total average monthly searches per 100,000 people), also show significant interest.

A spokesperson for Japan-101 commented on the findings, saying, “The results of the study revealed fascinating insights into the movie-watching habits and preferences of people across America. As the Oscars are approaching soon, it's evident that movie lovers across the country are eagerly anticipating the biggest night in the film industry, with the data showing which states may be most invested in seeing the films of their favorite genre win. The data also highlighted unique differences in movie tastes, which reflects the individuality and diversity of each state's culture when it comes to enjoying cinema.”

Methodology: Search volume data was taken for multiple movie and movie genre related terms. Monthly search volumes were calculated per 100,000 state population to reveal the most movie-obsessed states.
