The Ugliest Parts Of Your Home and What To Do About Them!
It’s time to face the reality that some parts of your home are simply ugly by default. It’s through no fault of your own; we’re talking about the things that are always installed or placed in a home when built, yet they never look good. You’ll see what we mean as you make your way down this list - and there will almost certainly be many things you can relate to.
Extractor Fans
All homes need extractor fans to suck up moisture when you’re showering or cooking. Without them your home would succumb to damp and mould quicker than you can imagine. While they’re essential, they’re also usually very ugly. You end up with utilitarian extractor fans on ceilings or walls that just look awful and ruin the way your bathroom/kitchen looks.
What can you do about them? Swap these bulky extractor fans for more plush ones that almost blend in with their surroundings. The lower-profile options are less visible and won’t grab your attention immediately, making them a great home improvement idea.
White Plastic Switches & Sockets
Every house is automatically built with those horrible plastic switches and sockets. White plastic is the cheapest material available, so you can see why building companies use it. That doesn’t stop these switches and sockets from being a complete eyesore that “cheapens” any room in your house.
Thankfully, they’re easy for you to unscrew and replace with premium switches and sockets. Get some brass options or brushed metal ones that actually go with your interior design. You can have different types in different rooms depending on the other colours and materials in play. The cheap and nasty plastic is no more, replaced with a much higher-end finish that amplifies a room.
Low-Quality Door Handles
Similarly, the door handles in your home are also usually made from low-quality materials. They’ll be chrome or steel-plated handles that aren’t really designed to last. Within a few months, they’ll start peeling or chipping away, revealing the main material beneath. Plus, they just look quite basic and ugly, so it’s worth swapping them out for better variations.
Just like your switches and sockets, you’ll easily be able to replace old door handles with nicer versions. The key here is to make these things match: if you’ve gone for brass switches and sockets, a brass door handle makes sense for synergy. It’s all about bringing together small design elements to make your home more visually appealing.
Big Radiators
Not every home has radiators, but when you do, they’re always ugly. They take up so much space on the walls and can be so bulky and cumbersome. Swap them out for more slimline models that match the rest of your hardware. You could also consider an alternative home heating solution like underfloor heating, which completely removes the need for a radiator in some rooms.
Most people will agree that these four things are by far the ugliest parts of a home. We’re not taking into account any poorly maintained areas - or terrible design choices from previous owners - this is all about the default things you find in your house that just look awful. Well, at least you can fix them now!
