Horror Movies About... Pregnancy?
It turns out that you’re not the only one who thinks that pregnancy is the stuff of horror movies. Hollywood directors seem to agree with you, and they’ve been cashing in on the idea for some time.
The basic plot for one of these movies goes something like this: there’s a strange demonic force growing inside a woman’s belly. Once the nine months are up, she releases it into the world where it does all sorts of nasty things. Everything seems idyllic to begin with, but eventually goes horribly wrong.
Isabelle (2018)
Take Isabelle, for instance, a 2018 horror film that explores the topic of miscarriage. The main couple, Larissa and Matt Kane are excited about the new pregnancy and move into a new home. However, over time, Larissa begins to have unpleasant visions of the women living next door. Over time, her life becomes days filled with grief and sorrow. The movie itself is terrible, but it is still enough to creep you out if you like that sort of thing.
Prevenge (2016)
Prevenge follows the story of Ruth, a pregnant woman who is trying to deal with the untimely loss of her husband. At the start of the film, things seem normal. However, Ruth eventually realizes that her baby is inciting her to commit murder.
To deal with the problem, Ruth repeatedly returns to the doctor, trying to find out whether there is something medically wrong. When she eventually delivers, she isn’t sure whether her baby is an evil genius or not. She also has to raise a child while dealing with the fact that she has comitted multiple murders.
The Gift (2015)
This film follows the story of a mother called Robyn and her move to Los Angeles with her partner, Simon Callem, played by the famous actor, Jason Bateman. During the move, they get caught up with some creepy acquaintances from the past. As they become more entwined in their lives. Eventually, it transpires that Simon is the main culprit and has done a lot of evil in the past.
American Horror Stories: Ba’al (2021)
If you’re looking for horror movies on HBO right now, then you might want to check out American Horror Stories: Ba’al. While it’s a part of an anthology, you can watch it by itself if you want to.
The goal of the film is to take a deeper look at the topic of pregnancy. The lead woman, Liv Whitley, wants to give birth more than anything in the world. But when she attends the fertility clinic, the receptionist gives her a strange-looking figurine, promising her that it will help with conception. Hoping it will work, Liv takes it home. However, she soon discovers that it has a demonic side.
False Positive (2021)
Lastly, False Positive follows the story of young mom Lucy as she finds out that she’s finally pregnant after many years of trying. This feminist horror story follows Lucy’s trials and tribulations at the hands of her male co-workers – and her not-so-nice fertility doctor, played by Pierce Brosnan.
