6 Tips for Getting Fit and Movie Ready

by Kevin Gardner

Working in film is a dream job for hundreds of people. Unfortunately, unless you're a character actor (someone who plays more comedic, over-the-top roles), you'll likely need an extremely fit body in order to succeed. While this doesn't mean that you have to be skinny, it is helpful to be in the best shape you can (healthily) be in. If you're unsure where to start, here are six tips for getting fit and movie ready.

1. Adjust Your Eating Habits

What you put in your body is an essential component of fitness. However, before you go down this road, you must address your mental health. Working towards a healthier diet does not necessitate any self-hatred. You are beautiful the way you are!

Once you feel comfortable with this journey, you can begin to examine your eating habits. You'll want to address the colors of your food, particularly when it comes to vegetables. The darker and greener the vegetable, the better it is for you. If you hate this type of food (which many people do), try masking the taste with something else. For instance, you can make a filling and healthy smoothie with:

  • Fruit

  • Milk (oat milk works great in smoothies!)

  • Spinach and/or kale

  • The best protein powder for you

  • Yogurt or tofu for texture

2. Create Goals

One of the hardest things to achieve when making a huge change is perseverance. While you may feel motivated when you make this plan, that drive can easily dwindle over the next week. A great way to counteract this issue is to make goals.

Having goals may make your endgame feel less out of reach. Instead of waiting until the end to congratulate yourself, you can feel accomplished at various points. This is often a great motivator, especially if you want to work on self-love.

3. Find Role Models

Finding role models is an excellent way to both plan and motivate. Since almost every type of actor has a different ideal body type, you'll want to research your type and find people who fit it. For example, superhero films require a very specific fitness level. Actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have planned fitness regimens to follow. On the other hand, actors in period dramas likely have less intense and more aesthetic-based workouts.

4. Experiment With Workouts

While you may want to follow certain exercise guidelines, it's important to remember that everyone's unique. One person's gym routine may not have a similar effect on you. Therefore, it's essential to do some experimentation. If you're unsure about what changes need to be made, you can always consult a trainer. These people can analyze your build and determine the best plan for you.

5. Make a Calendar

One of the most vital tips to follow is to work out regularly. While it can be tempting to only put aside a day or two each week, this lack of repetition is unlikely to be effective.

One of the best ways to maintain your workout regimen is to get a calendar. You can use an app with notifications, but it may be more helpful to have a physical reminder. Use bright and bold colors to connote certain workouts. In order to ensure you'll remember these plans, place the calendar somewhere you often look.

6. Create Mandatory Minimums

If you respond well to ultimatums, you can also try to make mandatory minimums for each week. For example, you might make it necessary to work out for an hour each day. If you're really struggling with motivation, try having a friend be the bad cop.

Getting the perfect body for your ideal role takes a lot of effort and perseverance. No matter what, remember that your healthiest body is the best one for you.
